Post Workout ‘Morning Kick’ Protein Shake 

One of the questions vegans get asked the most is “but where do you get your protein?”. I often receive messages from people who are very active telling me that they’re afraid that going vegan will make it more difficult for them to meet their protein needs. I, too, used to be obsessed with protein and feared that cutting out meat, dairy and eggs would inevitably lead to a protein deficiency. Luckily, and contrary to common belief, it is quite easy to get enough protein on a vegan diet as many plant-based foods contain high levels of it. For this “Post Workout ‘Morning Kick’ Protein Shake” recipe, I teamed up with REBBL, a company that makes amazing dairy-free drinks and actively helps fight human trafficking by donating a percentage of every sale to the non profit NOT FOR SALE (click here to find out more about their mission). In addition to their line of superfood elixirs, they also make proteins in three different flavors: dark chocolate, vanilla spice and cold-brew. I chose the cold-brew flavor for this recipe to include a little “morning kick”. This is the perfect breakfast and/or post morning workout shake. It’s full of nutrients and can replace a whole meal depending on how hungry you are or how strenuous your workout was. If you use both bananas, the whole shake contains almost 19 grams of protein (12 grams from the REBBL protein alone), that’s more than a whey protein shake (containing 18 grams per scoop).

Here’s how to make the shake:

Ingredients
  • 1 bottle of REBBL Cold-Brew Protein
  • 1-2 frozen bananas* (depending on how hungry you are)
  • 1 cup of baby spinach
  • 2 tbsp (1/8 cup) of unsweetened shredded coconut*, optional
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tbsp chia seeds
  • ½ tbsp hemp seeds
Instructions
  1. Blend all ingredients until smooth. You’ll get the best results using a high-speed blender, but any blender will do!
  2. Enjoy!
  3. *Notes:
  4. Bananas are super easy to freeze. Simply peel ripe bananas (they’re ripe when they’re spotty and smell sweet) and place them in a ziplock bag or reusable container to keep it eco-friendly. You can leave them whole as that’ll make it easier to know how many bananas you’re actually using and they’re very easy to break or cut when they’re frozen. If you don’t have frozen bananas at hand, you can use unfrozen ones, but in that case I’d recommend adding a few ice cubes to get the same shake-like consistency.
  5. Only use the shredded coconut if you really like the taste of coconut. The coconut milk in REBBL elixirs and proteins is creamy and has a fairly neutral taste, so they’re great even for people who normally don’t like coconut.
